FAQ

How yapworks actually works.

A hobby project. Tied to Steam. Free for everyone.

What is yapworks?

yapworks is a feedback board for Steam games. Each game can have its own board. Players can post ideas, vote on suggestions from others, and developers receive a clear ranked list of what their community wants.

This is a hobby project created because existing options either cost money, spread discussions across Discords, or get lost in Steam forum threads.

Is this affiliated with Valve or Steam?

No. yapworks is an independent hobby project. Steam sign-in goes through Steam's public OpenID endpoint. Steam, the Steam logo, and any game names or art are trademarks of their respective owners.

Why do I sign in with Steam?

There are three reasons focused on quality:

  • It proves you are a real player and not a bot.
  • It shows the games you own so your library tab displays relevant boards.
  • It ensures one vote per Steam account, preventing groups from manipulating votes.

You can browse most of yapworks without signing in. You only need an account to post, comment, or vote.

Can I create a board for any game?

Yes, for any Steam app. The board creator must verify ownership or publisher status through Steam during the creation process. Once a board is set up, it becomes the official board for that game.

Who can see my activity?

By default, your profile is public. Anyone with the link can see the boards you've posted on, your comments, and your votes. Public votes carry more weight because they can be traced back to you.

If you prefer not to be visible, you can change your profile to private in settings. In that case, others will see a locked placeholder instead of your activity.

Boards are public by default. Some boards can be restricted (owners only, or fully private) at the board admin's discretion.

Does it cost anything?

yapworks is free.

Privacy

yapworks does not sell your data and does not use it for anything outside what is recorded here.

When you sign in with Steam, yapworks stores your Steam ID (the public 64-bit ID), your public Steam persona name and avatar, and the list of Steam apps you own. Owned games are only used to fill your library tab and are not shown to other users. Posts, comments, votes, and follows you create are linked to your Steam ID and shown on your profile unless you change it to private in settings.

yapworks has one cookie: yw_session, a secure login cookie that lasts 30 days. There are no analytics or tracking cookies.

Hosting provider request logs may temporarily store IP addresses and user-agent strings for abuse protection. yapworks does not run its own analytics, error reporting, ad networks, or fingerprinting.

We rely on third parties for the following:

  • Vercel hosts the site and delivers it through their CDN. You can view Vercel's privacy policy here.
  • Neon hosts the Postgres database. You can view Neon's privacy policy here.
  • Steam OpenID and the Steam Web API are used for sign-in, to fetch your public Steam profile, and to check the games you own. You can view Valve's privacy policy here.
  • Steam's content delivery network (steamstatic.com) provides game cover art and header images directly loaded by your browser when you view a board.
  • OpenAI's moderation API checks new posts and comments for harmful content. Only the text of the post or comment is sent. You can view OpenAI's privacy policy here.

To delete your data, go to settings and select Delete account. This removes your profile, sessions, votes, follows, and notifications. Past posts and comments will remain on their boards for context, but they will be scrubbed and marked as [deleted]. This action cannot be undone.

Feedback on yapworks itself

yapworks uses its own platform for feedback. Anything related to the site is posted on the yapworks feedback board. Posts there receive the same treatment as other boards: vote, comment, and track status.
